MYSORE: The body of Prathiba, a call centre executive allegedly killed by a taxi driver in Bangalore, was cremated at Harishchandra Ghat near here on Friday night.

The body was brought to her in-laws' residence on Geetha Road in Chamarajapuram here in the evening.

A pall of gloom descended at the residence of Prathiba's father-in-law, N. Shamsundar, where a large number of friends and relatives had gathered.

According to family sources, Prathiba was the only daughter of Srikantamurthy and Gowramma. Prathiba had lost her father in a fire accident five years ago. She had married Pawan, an employee of a finance firm in Bangalore, and had plans to celebrate their first marriage anniversary next month.

Mr. Pawan is the son of Mr. Shamsundar, a land developer.

Family sources sought to clarify that Prathiba was not a mere call centre employee, but a qualified engineering graduate, who had passed out of an engineering college here before taking up a job as a technical support staff.

Meanwhile, the incident has shocked IT employees here, who joined Prathiba's family members in their moment of grief.

Sujatha Rajpal, an employee with an IT company, expressed shock over Prathiba's death. She said that the companies where women work at night should have a foolproof security during transportation.

However, it is unwise to cry a halt to employing women in call centres in the wake of the tragedy. Chief Executive Officer of Excel Soft B.S. Sudhanva termed the killing "sad and unfortunate." G.L. Shekar, Special Officer, E-learning Centre, Visvesvaraya Technological University, said that the incident is "tragic and shocking."
