Title conferred on Aruna Sayeeram

Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha's Music Festival begins

CHENNAI : Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha on Friday conferred the title of "Sangeetha Kalasarathy" on Aruna Sayeeram, vocalist, on the occasion of its 105th year December Music Festival here.

The president of the Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai, Sri Gauthamananda, conferred the title. It carried a gold medal, Rs. 5,000, `birudhu patra' and a memento.

The citation read out by the sabha secretary, M. Krishnamurthy, said the title was being presented to the musician for her dedicated and continued service to Carnatic music.

Inaugurating the celebrations, Swami Gauthamananda said music was one form through which one could reach God. Swami Vivekananda was a good singer. Both he and Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa were lovers of music and they had given their personal blessings to musicians.

He released the sabha's Isai Karutharangam Malar and the first copy was received by V.V. Srivatsa of the Music Academy.

The sabha president, Nalli Kuppuswami Chetti, said this year's festival would be held till January 3.

Jaya Arunachalam lighted the traditional lamp.

Cleveland V.V. Sundaram was among those who felicitated Ms. Aruna Sayeeram.
