Traders oppose opening up of retail sector

Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE: The Kerala State Vyapari Vyavasayi Samithi district unit will take out a march to the Income Tax Office here and hold a dharna in front of the office on Tuesday in protest against the Centre's move to allow foreign investment in the retail sector.

The Centre should withdraw the move to open the retail sector to foreigners, thereby putting lakhs of retail traders in the country to hardship. Samithi district secretary K. Sreedharan and joint secretary C.K. Vijayan told reporters here on Saturday that the globalisation policies would cause destruction in all the sectors. They alleged that the American retail giant Wal-Mart was "advising the Centre to allow foreign investment in the retail sector." Studies showed that Wal-Mart was the reason behind many small-scale retailers winding up their shops, they said.
