Wild card for Sanam, Jeevan

NEW DELHI: Sanam Singh, Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan along with Purav Raja and Vijit Sehgal have been given the wild cards for the State Bank of Saurashtra National grass court tennis championship to be played at the DSOI Complex, Dhaula Kuan, here from Monday.

In the women's section, the wild cards have gone to Vishaka Sheoran, Shweta Solanki, Shalini Sahoo and Renuka Keshwani.

In an interaction with the media, the 17-year-old Sanam said that he was brimming with confidence and was looking forward to doing well on grass, though he had played only once before on that surface, at Wimbledon in the junior event this year.

''It is quite a strong field and I look forward to giving it my best'', said Sanaa Bhambri who had won the national hardcourt championship last year.

The former National champion Rushmi Chakravarthi said that she was happy that the championship had been revived after 2001 and said that she would try hard to be at her best despite not having had any practice for nearly a month because of heavy rain back home in Chennai.

Isha Lakhani, the reigning National champion, said that she was excited about playing on grass, though she had played on it only once before on it in a junior tournament a few years ago. — Special Correspondent
