TIRUPUR: The residents of Avanashi, especially the little ones, are a happy lot.
New avenue
The park constructed by the Avanashi special panchayat has given them a new avenue for entertainment. On a sprawling three acres, the recently-opened park has a play area for children, in addition to lawns and fountains. The president of the panchayat A. Venkatachalam says the park on an average lures 500 visitors a day, most of them children. The number goes up during weekends. Of the total Rs. 7.5 lakhs spent towards the construction of the park, the local body contributed Rs. 3.5 lakhs, and the rest came from the public.
No entry fee
As of now the local body does not collect entry fee. "We want the park to be maintained well. "We will handover its maintenance work to a women self-help group (SHG) or service organisations such as Rotary, Lions or Jaycees. We will decide this on December 25," Mr. Venkatachalam said.
