3 goats killed, 2 hurt in attack

Staff Reporter

Is it leopard or just a pack of dogs?

KOZHIKODE: Three goats were killed and two others seriously injured in an attack by an animal which is yet to be identified near the Rishipuram Temple area at Govindapuram in the city in the early hours of Sunday. The incident came in the backdrop of rumours on Thursday that a leopard is on the prowl at Mankavu on the outskirts of the city.

The five goats were reared by Arun, son of Narayanan Nair and Shine Ram. The Forest authorities say that the goats were attacked not by a leopard but by a pack of dogs or foxes. The attack took place 2 km from the area where forest officials had arranged a cage to trap the suspected leopard.

T. Kuruvilla Eapen, animal welfare officer, says that the unidentified animal is Indian striped hyena. He had found footprints of two adults and two or, perhaps, three pubs of hyena. The difference in width of the marks of two canine teeth on the attacked goats is below two inches, showing that it is a pointed jaw animal, such as hyena, and not leopard.
