Four auditors die in road accident

Srikakulam : Four persons -- Nirmala, Vasantha, Srinivas and Praveen -- all junior auditors from Kakinada were killed in a road accident near Narasannapeta, 25 km from here, in the wee hours of Sunday.

Four others -- T. Padma, G.V. Rajalakshmi, B.S. Sithapathi Rao and driver D. Raju -- who sustained injuries, were admitted to hospital. The accident occurred when the van they were travelling in hit a stationary lorry. - Special Correspondent

Talent search exam on January 1

Hyderabad : The 8th Siasat talent search exam will be jointly organised by the Siasat daily and M.S. Education Centre for tenth class students on January 1 from 2 p.m. to 3.40 p.m. The examination will be held in 24 centres spread over nine districts, according to examination coordinator Abdul Lateef Khan.

Top three students will be given cash prizes of Rs. 5000, Rs. 3000 and Rs. 1000 each. The district toppers will be award Rs. 500 each. The examination will be held in Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Adilabad, Karimnagar, Mahboobnagar, Medak, Nalgonda, Nizamabad and Warangal districts.-Staff Reporter

Four injured as car hits rock

TIRUMALA : Four persons of a family sustained injuries when the car in which they were travelling hit a rock on the second ghat road leading to Tirumala on Sunday.

According to the police, the family belonging to Bangalore were proceeding towards Tirumala.

All the injured were taken to Tirupati for treatment after the first aid at the TTD-run Aswini hospital. - Staff Reporter

Constitution of pay panel demanded

HYDERABAD : The Coordination Committee of Central Government Pensioners' Associations, Andhra Pradesh, at a meeting here on Saturday resolved to urge the Government to constitute Sixth Pay Commission immediately.

In a statement, G. S. Vittal, general secretary of the committee, also wanted continuance of the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) in its present form and drop the move to stop pension to all those attaining 75 years, according to a press release.

Security cover for Dalai Lama

GUNTUR: T he district police on Saturday received a list of seven persons from security officials of Dharamsala Norbulingka Institute in Himachal Pradesh from whom the Dalai Lama could face threat as part of their regular internal exchange of information.

For maintaining general law and order a Circle-Inspector and nine SIs would be deployed in Amaravathi, while a Deputy Superintendent of Police would take care of security of the Dalai Lama in addition to the Z-Plus NSG Cover. - Staff Reporter

Man, son killed in accident

Sangareddy: A man and son riding a motorcycle died instantaneously when an unknown vehicle hit them on Sunday morning on the outskirts of Kankole under the Sadasivapet police station limits.

Mohammed Sardar (45) and his son Mohammed Saleem both residents of Hyderabad and natives of Kaveli village in Kohir mandal of Medak district were returning from Kankole to Hyderabad after attending a ceremony.

Protection for call centre staff urged

HYDERABAD: The Working Women's Coordination Committee affiliated to CITU has demanded adequate protection to women employed in call centres.

Women should be exempted from night duty, committee's State secretary M. Padmasree, said in a statement issued here on Sunday. She deplored the rape and murder of a woman at Bangalore.

Protest by students

KURNOOL: Students of Silver Jubilee College protested against the poor quality of food served to them in the hostel here on Saturday.

They told Principal M. Nagaraju and warden Pullaiah that curry and vegetables were offered in very limited quantity and most of the time the food contained poor nutrients. The authorities convinced the students that they could not manage to provide better food with an amount of Rs. 12 allocated for each student per day. - Staff Reporter

Lok Adalat

MADANAPALLE: A total of 123 cases were disposed of at the mega Lok Adalat held on the premises of Additional District Judge court here on Saturday. Some 110 cases pertained to payment of municipal tax in which Rs. 14,37,135 were recovered by Madanapalle Municipality. Another eight civil cases and five criminal cases were also disposed of.

Sub judge Ramalinga Reddy, District Additional judge P. Ramesh Babu, First Additional District Magistrate Nagabhushana Rao and others were present. - Correspondent

JVV conference

Nellore: The two-day annual conference of Jana VignanaVedika (JVV) will be held at Kadapa town, from December 24. According to K. Krishnaiah, district general secretary, Nellore, Forest Minister S. Vijayaramaraju will inaugurate the conference. The conference will focus on strengthening blood donation movement, AIDS awareness, health and education. - Staff Reporter

Nellore: The authorities here have made necessary arrangements for the supply of application forms and prospectus relating to degree courses of B.R. Ambedkar Open University, through the three eSeva centres at Nellore, Kavali and Gudur. Body found in tank

Nellore: The body of a unidentified woman was found floating in the Nellore tank, on the outskirts of the town, on Sunday evening. Some of the passers-by who noticed it alerted the police. - Staff Reporter

Test for surveyors' posts

Kakinada: As against the total of 194 candidates selected in the physical endurance test for the 13 posts of deputy surveyors, only 178 attended the written test held at the Municipal Girls High School in the Church Squire area here on Sunday. Joint Collector M. Dana Kishore has personally monitored the test at the centre. District Revenue Officer M. Suryanarayana, who is the Chief Superintendent, said that the test was conducted peacefully. Correspondent

Raids on CD shops

Srikakulam: Police conducted raids on CD shops on Saturday night and seized as many as 2,600 pirated CDs and more than 140 porn CDs from two shops. Two persons Rajamahanthy Venkata Prasada Rao and K. Sudhir Kumar were arrested. According to the DSP A. Sreeramamurthy, who had organised the raids, one more person Saikumar is still at large. First, a video shop in Nehrunagar was raided and about 100 CDs were seized, which included 87 pirated CDs. On information from the arrested person, another house in HB Colony where the CDs were being pirated on a large scale was raided. Special Correspondent

`Abolish bids for contract workers'

VIZIANAGARAM: Andhra Pradesh Medical Contract Workers Union has demanded abolition of calling bids for engaging contract workers as the contractors are not implementing the minimum wages stipulated by the Government. The union State general secretary B. Narayana Reddy told a press conference on Sunday that contract workers were being paid Rs.1,000 to Rs.1,200 per month instead of Rs. 2,386 per month. He also demanded 48 working hours in a week, a weekly off, ESI and PF benefits to the workers. He said the union would launch Statewide stir any time during next month for fulfilling their demands. AITUC district general secretary V. Krishnam Raju was present. Correspondent

Rajiv Internet centres

Kakinada: East Godavari district would have 537 Rajiv Internet Village centres soon, taking the online facility to the doorsteps of the rural folk, according to V. Radhakrishna district manager of Times, one of the two technology partners entrusted with the task of installation of the network centres. Speaking to newsmen after opening the administrative office of the Times here on Sunday, he said, they were planning for installation of the 537 Rajiv Internet centres in the district by next May end. Two centres were opened at Jaggampet, Rajanagaram and the third centre would be opened in Temple Street on December 25. Correspondent

Change in phone numbers

Srikakulam: The phone numbers of various free services of BSNL in Srikakulam have been changed.

The following are the new numbers -- STD booking 1580 (old number is 180), STD information 1581 (181), ISD call booking 1586 (186), phonograms 1585 (185), STD complaints 1582 (182). There is no changes in the local enquiry number which is 197, according to a press release by the Deputy General Manager
