CHENNAI: For the first time in 120 years, rainfall during the North East monsoon crossed the 200 cm mark. By Sunday, the total rainfall recorded during this season had reached 203 cm in Nungambakkam. In the period October 1-December 18, the Nungambakkam observatory had registered 203 cm rainfall against the normal 72 cm. The previous best for the entire season was 160 cm in 1884. The next record was in 1996 when the observatory recorded 157 cm. Another record set is the highest annual rainfall. Thanks to heavy rainfall this season, the total rainfall for Nungambakkam this year is 249 cm overtaking the previous high of 244 cm in 1996. This season also saw the Meenambakkam observatory recording the highest amount of rainfall in 24 hours in December. On December 3, the observatory recorded 28 cm. Till now, the maximum rainfall was 17 cm, which was registered on December 9, 1969, according to the Meteorological office.
