Power cut

CHENNAI : Power supply will be suspended in Flower Bazaar and Mahalingapuram on December 20 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. for maintenance work. Supply will be resumed before 5 p.m. if the work is completed.

Fund moves to new building

The Alwarpet Benefit Fund Limited will start functioning at Vasanth Apartments, 75, CP Ramaswamy Road, Alwarpet, Chennai-18 with effect from December 26. The telephone numbers remain the same. Because of the shift, no transactions will take place from December 19 to 23.

Blood donation

Centurion Bank of Punjab Ltd organised a blood donation camp with Rotary Central-TTK-VHS Blood Bank on December 18. There were 35 donors, consisting of staff members, customers and members of the public.

Eye camp

Singhvi Charitable Trust conducted a free eye check-up and dental camp at Thiruvallur recently. Men, women and children totalling 687 were screened for diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, cataract, vision check-ups and dental problems. They also conducted an eye check-up camp in Triplicane where 110 people were treated.

Maths workshop

Nehru Children's Cultural Association is organising a 10-day mathematics workshop for students from classes 4 to10. The workshop will be from December 22-31 between 10.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. at Gopalapuram Boys' Higher Secondary School. This is to mark the 119th birth anniversary of mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. Last date for registrations is December 22. Contact phone number 24453014 for details.

Discount on books

Bookpoint is conducting an exhibition of Oxford University Press books till December 28. Books published for 2004-2005 will have 15 percent discount. There is also a special display of new books by Valmik Thapar on "The Voice of the Tiger".

Symposium

The international symposium on `Advances in Research on Neurodegenerative Diseases' organised by Department of Pharmacology and Environmental Toxicology, University of Madras and Society of Neurochemistry, India was held on Friday and Saturday. It was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor, S.P.Thiagarajan. He said a centre was being established for research in degenerative diseases at Dr. ALM Post-Graduate Institute of Basic Medical Services, University of Madras.

Motorcyclist killed

A motorcycle rider died after his vehicle was involved in an accident with a brick laden truck at Madipakkam on Saturday. Police said Devadoss (24) with his brother Yesuraj was riding the bike towards Alandur. Near the Madipakkam Koot Road bus stop, a lorry knocked him down. While Yesuraj escaped with bruises, Devadoss came under the rear wheels of the truck. He was rushed to a private hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
