India hails Bhutan's move

Diplomatic Correspondent

NEW DELHI: India has wished the people and Government of Bhutan continued peace and stability as well as fulfilment of their aspirations as they embark on a new Constitutional system, the External Affairs Ministry spokesman said on Monday.

"We have seen the announcement by His Majesty the King of Bhutan Jigme Singye Wangchuck that His Royal Highness Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk will be enthroned as the fifth Druk Gyalpo before 2008," he said.

"We wish His Royal Highness Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk [the current Crown Prince] as he prepares to assume the throne within the framework of a new Constitution," the spokesman said.

The announcement was a significant moment in Bhutan's history, which for the last three decades has been guided and shaped by King Jigme Singye Wangchuck.

Pointing out that the King had also announced that a new Constitution based on a system of parliamentary democracy will be put in place in 2008, the spokesman added: "His [the current King's] commitment to an open and extensive process of consultations with the people of Bhutan in this regard is yet another symbol of statesmanship and wisdom.
