PANAJI: The Silver Jubilee Indian Expedition to Antarctica was formally launched at the National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research (NCAOR) at the port city of Mormugao on Monday by Rear Admiral A.K. Handa, Chairman and Managing Director, Goa Shipyard Ltd. Rasik Ravindra, former Antarctic scientist and Deputy Director, Geological Survey of India, and S.K. Das, Secretary, Department of Ocean Development, were present. The silver jubilee team will be led by L. Prem Krishna of the Archaeological Survey of India and will comprise 23 winter members and 27 summer members drawn from 24 research institutes in the country. For the first time, the Antarctic team would have two students, it was disclosed. The expedition would leave by the Israeli vessel Paardeberg on December 22 from Cape Town.
