CHENNAI: There is enormous scope for improving trade ties between India and The Netherlands and there are many sectors where there could be more bilateral investments to the benefit of both, said The Netherlands Ambassador to India, E.F. Ch Niehe, here on Monday. Addressing the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry here Mr. Niehe admitted there had been long time neglect of India by The Netherlands. The situation changed after 1991. Now there was frequent exchange of trade delegations between the two countries. But still India's share of overall Dutch trade continued to be very small. Indian exports accounted for only 0.48 per cent of total Dutch imports while Dutch exports to India were just 0.23 per cent of total Dutch exports.
The Dutch Ambassador said after India opened its doors for foreign investment, the scope improved substantially. In certain sectors such as consumer electronics, information technology, green energy production, agriculture and bio-technology the core competence of both the countries was strong. Both countries could even think of setting up a joint venture in Europe.
The Ambassador said that his country was also ready to share its know-how and expertise in controlled irrigation, flood control measures, inland waterways and development of various ports. With increasing demand for energy in India, The Netherlands was ready to share its expertise in the production of wind and solar energy. India's main exports included edible fruits, and nuts animal/vegetable fats, chemical products, apparel and clothing accessories while its exports from The Netherlands included organic chemicals, plastic and articles, paper, nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and medical appliances.
V. Balaraman, president of the MCCI, spoke.
