CHIKMAGALUR: About 62 per cent polling was recorded in Chikmagalur district in the elections to the zilla and taluk panchayats held on Monday. Polling was peaceful, barring stray incidents. About 50 per cent polling was recorded by noon. In some polling stations, there were complaints about names of voters missing from the list. No untoward incidents were reported from 33 polling stations in the naxalite-affected areas in Koppa, Sringeri and Mudigere taluks. Voters at Alageshwara in Koppa taluk boycotted the elections to protest against the lack of basic facilities in their village. Fifty ballot papers were missing in a polling station in Sringeri taluk when the presiding officer went for lunch. Polling was held up for about 10 minutes in Bilekallu polling station near Chikmagalur after BJP workers protested against the alleged proxy voting. Proof of identity was made compulsory after this. In some polling stations, voting was extended till 6 p.m. About 35 cases have been registered and 15 vehicles illegally transporting liquor valued at Rs.15 lakhs have been seized. About eight cases have been registered by the Excise Department.
