VISAKHAPATNAM: The dream of Polavaram multi-purpose project becoming a reality "is one of the happiest moments in my 50 years of political career'', said senior Congress leader and Visakhapatnam-I MLA Dronamraju Satyanarayana on Monday. ``It was in 1946, after Tenneti Viswanadham spoke for a long time in the then Assembly, Ramapadasagar, the present Polavaram project, took shape. Then Chief Minister T. Anjaiah laid the foundation-stone in 1980 which was lying like Ahalya till Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy set his foot on it to bring life to it (project),'' Mr. Satyanarayana said at a function organised to celebrate his 73rd birthday. The veteran Uttarandhra leader said that the unstinted support people gave him helped him continue in politics and serve them, and promised to live for the people till his last breath. The strength provided by them helped him shape many leaders. "I keep on producing leaders, I am like a factory,'' he quipped. The function marked the absence of the party MLAs, except for S. Rangaraju (Visakha-II), who presided over the meeting. The MLAs, as also Minister from neighbouring Vizianagaram district Botsa Satyanarayana, reportedly skipped the celebrations as Commercial Taxes Minister K. Ramakrishna was not invited to the meeting. District Cooperative Central Bank Chairman Balireddy Satyarao, who was with Mr. Satyanarayana till the DCCB elections, also did not attend. However, the turnout of party supporters and city party leaders was impressive as the venue, Gurujada Kalakshetram, was packed with Congress workers. All the party leaders from the city and former corporators were present.
Birthday greetings
Lok Sabha member N. Janardhana Reddy and Rajya Sabha member T. Subbirami Reddy could not attend the meeting as the party had issued a whip to attend Parliament on Tuesday, Mr. Satyanarayana said. Both MPs visited his house in the morning to convey their birthday greetings, and announced grants for development programmes to mark the senior leader's birthday. Mr. Satyanarayana was felicitated by the organising committee. Several leaders and party workers garlanded him.
