SPICING THE MARKET: Kunal Ahooja, CEO, Spice, launching Spice mobile phones in Chennai for the Tamil Nadu market.
CHENNAI: Spice Ltd., a group company of M Corp Global, a trans-national group, has launched its mobile phones in Tamil Nadu after covering other parts of India. The Chief Executive Officer, Kunal Ahooja, said the company would initially launch four different models. The company planned to focus on building its brand nation-wide and expanding its reach along with the expansion of telecom operators to smaller and mid sized towns. Launching the mobile phones here on Tuesday, the CEO said Spice was also setting up a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at Baddi in Himachal Pradesh. At present the company imports the mobile phones from Taiwan. He said the company got its customised chip designed from a Noida-based software development company, MediaTek. These chips were then sent to two companies in Taiwan Wistron Neweb and Inventec where the phones were made. Mr. Ahooja said the penetration of cellular networks into section B, C, D and E markets were on the increase, which in turn was raising the demand for entry level mobile handsets into the semi-urban and rural areas. As part of its strategy to widen its distribution network, Spice would cover 1,400 outlets in 30 districts of Tamil Nadu through a model of one regional distributor and district-wise micro distributors, said K. Muzaffar, Head-Sales.
