Mumbai: Taj TV Ltd., owners of sports channel Ten Sports, on Tuesday submitted a proposal before the Bombay High Court saying they were ready to provide feed of sports events to Prasar Bharati in rural areas as an interim measure pending their petition challenging the Centre's guidelines on the issue. Taj TV's lawyers argued that the issue of public interest with regard to the right to watch international cricket matches involving India arose only in the case of rural areas as the cable TV network was largely non-existent in those areas. But in the metros, they argued, Prasar Bharati could not demand the broadcasting signals as cable TV was easily available. Justice Ranjana Desai and Justice Abhay Oka adjourned the hearing to Wednesday. The court is hearing a petition filed by Taj TV challenging the Centre's recent policy guidelines that make it mandatory for sports channels with broadcast rights to share their feed with Prasar Bharati for national and international sports events held in India or abroad. Ten Sports contended that if they were forced to share feed with Prasar Bharati, they would lose revenue from both advertisers and cable operators (as cable operators have to buy decoders from the channel). But counsel for the Information and Broadcasting Ministry opposed the proposal saying that even in urban areas many people did not have access to cable TV. PTI
