Egypt and Britain have accepted a request by the Sudan Parliament to recognise the independence of the Sudan, ruled by Britain and Egypt for 56 years, it was officially announced in Cairo and London on December 19. The Sudan Parliament, by voting for independence, had turned down the alternative of some form of union with Egypt provided under an Anglo-Egyptian agreement signed in 1953. Mr. Azkaria Mohieddin, Egyptian Minister in charge of Sudan Affairs, said in a broadcast on December 19: "The Egyptian Government has acceded to the wishes of the Sudanese Parliament regarding the proclamation of independence. We wish the Sudan a prosperous future and every happiness and we are in contact with the British Government to respond equally speedily to the Sudanese wishes." A Foreign Office statement issued in London said Britain welcomed the declaration by the Sudanese Parliament regarding its independence.
