WTO deal

The G-110, a grand coalition of developing countries, must be commended for putting up a spirited fight against the developed countries and clinching a deal at the sixth ministerial conference of the WTO in Hong Kong.

But the G-110 should not become complacent. The developed countries have betrayed the world many times in the past.

Union Commerce Minister Kamal Nath and the G-110 deserve praise for a hard-won declaration. However, the decision to end farm subsidies does not sound convincing.

Mr. Kamal Nath has termed the WTO declaration positive while the CPI (M) and the Swadeshi Jagran Manch have criticised the Minister.

While it appears from media reports that Mr. Kamal Nath played a major role in clinching the agreement, it is not clear how the interests of our farmers and industry will be protected.

There should be a healthy debate on the issues involved so that a clear picture emerges.

Kuzhithurai, T.N.
