Wholly avoidable

The editorial, `A wholly avoidable calamity' (Dec. 20), has brought out the failure of the administration in preventing such tragedies despite a similar incident last month.

It is a fact that no proper mechanism has been worked out to distribute relief material.

The Government should have avoided distributing cash as part of the relief package. It is a big temptation.

R. Muralikumar,

It is sad commentary that in this hour of grief, the Democratic People's Alliance is busy passing resolutions demanding the resignation of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. Hilda Raja,
Chennai

At this time of distress, the Opposition in Tamil Nadu should stand by the Government and try to make valuable suggestions. The people too should realise that breaking rules will always lead to disaster. If the victims had waited patiently in the queue, the tragedy would not have occurred.

A. Babu Karuppiah,
Madurai

Sam K. Sureshkrishnaa,
Chennai

M.V. Ramakrishnan,
Chennai
