KANNUR: Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has accused the United Democratic Front (UDF) Government of having `ruined' the State on all fronts. Inaugurating a blockade of the District Collectorate here on Tuesday by the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) as part of its State-wide protest demanding correction of the State Government's `anti-worker and anti-people' policies, Mr. Vijayan said the State had never before witnessed as `bad' a Government as the Oommen Chandy regime. Instead of owning up its failures, the Government is accusing the Opposition of scuttling development, he said adding it owes an explanation to the people on what it has done for the State.
`Promises unfulfilled'
The CPI(M) leader said the State's development had recorded a reversal since the UDF Government came to power in 2001. Its promise of providing jobs to 15 lakh people has not been fulfilled, he said adding it is also responsible for freezing recruitment in various departments. Mr. Vijayan said the UDF's criticism that the CPI(M) was publicly opposing and privately supporting Global Investor Meet proposals was baseless. The party will not allow sale of river water and mineral sand.
Flays Congress, Muslim League
He said the Indian Union Muslim League had become aware of the Narendran Commission report only after its defeat in the Manjeri Lok Sabha constituency. Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala, on his part, is aware of social welfare only when the Assembly election is round the corner, he said. The blockade affected the functioning of government offices in the Collectorate as officials could not enter the compound. CPI(M) leaders M.V. Jayarajan, MLA, P. Sasi, K.K. Narayanan and T. Krishnan addressed the protestors. CITU activists laid siege to the taluk offices in Thalassery and Taliparamba also.
