Staff Correspondent

DHARWAD: At two polling booths in the district, polling continued till 10 p.m. on Monday as there is a rush of voters in the evening, which led to an altercation between activists of political parties on the issue of allowing the latecomers to vote.

Deputy Commissioner M.S. Srikar told The Hindu that there is some confusion regarding allowing voters, who had come in time to exercise their franchise at Ingalahalli and Mugad polling booths. He said at Ingalahalli those who had come within 5 p.m. were given chits to enable them to cast their votes. But some more people came after the end of the stipulated time and demanded that they be allowed to vote. Polling was stopped because of confusion. But senior officials rushed to the spot and after talks with local leaders of the parties. At Mugad, confusion prevailed for a while because of presiding officer sealing the ballot box before allowing the voters in.
