`Stress on pace a prominent feature'

HYDERABAD: Reduced reliance on the spinners and increased stress on pace were the prominent features of India's win against England in the women's cricket series, said skipper Mithali Raj at a felicitation function here on Tuesday.

It was got up by A.P. State Tourism Minister, Dr. Geeta Reddy, a long time patron of the game and President of the AP Women's Cricket Association. "It was a good series, throwing up talent such as Sravanthi Raj Naidu (also from AP)," said the Indian skipper, who longed to have more players from the state in her team.

"Women's cricket needs to be projected on TV and the Women's Cricket Association of India (WCAI) should be merged with the BCCI," she said, while acknowledging the support of Dr. Reddy and the A.P. Chief Minister, Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

Earlier, lamenting the lack of support for women's cricket, Dr. Reddy said their male counterparts were showered with fame and fortune everywhere, while the ladies' game, badly in need of sponsorship, survived mostly on state support. Despite these handicaps, she said the game had spread to almost every district of the state.

Also felicitated were India all rounder Sravanthi Raj, young India players Gauhar Sultana and Savitha Nirala and a host of promising players, such as Sowmya, just 12 years old and a fan of Sachin Tendulkar and Nooshin Al Qadir.

It is also said that the event will also have a special feature of each team picking a minimum of Rs. 10,000 cash incentive and the winner and runner-up in both sections Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 25,000 respectively.
