VISAKHAPATNAM: Om Prakash has been appointed Managing Director of Bharat Heavy Plate and Vessels Limited. He will assume charge on Friday. A mechanical engineer from the Delhi College of Engineering, with an MBA (finance) degree from Punjab University, Mr. Om Prakash was till recently the Pinjore unit General Manager of Hindustan Machine Tools Limited's tractor division. He began his career as trainee engineer in 1974 with HMT Limited. - Staff Reporter

Lifer for one

ADILABAD: Adilabad Second Additional Sessions Judge K.V. Vijay Kumar on Tuesday sentenced to life Sinde Bheemaiah (45) of Narlapalli in Mandamarri mandal and fined him Rs. 3,000 for killing Rajam Mallamma (60) of the same village on January 20. According to prosecution he had killed the woman in agricultural fields near the village and stolen her gold ornaments. - Staff Reporter

Posts to be filled

Hyderabad: At least 50 posts of junior lecturers in Urdu medium will be filled through Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission and an equal number through promotion. The assurance was given by Principal Secretary, Higher Education, Asutosh Mishra, to a delegation of the All-India Urdu Educational Committee led by Mohd. Jaleel Pasha. - Staff Reporter

ANGRAU audit report

HYDERABAD: The annual accounts and audit report for 1990-91 of the Achrya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University was tabled in the Assembly on Tuesday by Agriculture Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy, with a plea to members to condone the 14-year delay. He attributed the delay to the diversion of staff for obtaining and furnishing replies to pending audit objections from 1964-65. - Special Correspondent

Fisherman drowned

Kakinada: A fisherman Seelam Apparao (55) of Pedavalasala village near Pedagadimoga fell off the boat accidentally and drowned while fishing in the sea on Tuesday. The Korangi Police have registered the case. - Correspondent

11 acquitted

Nellore: Eleven persons who took part in the anti-arrack agitation which rocked the State, nine years ago, were acquitted by the Second Additional Judicial Magistrate Court, Nellore, on Monday. Among those acquitted are present Deputy Mayor Madala Venkateswarlu, former councillor A. Ramamma and the then district vice-president of Jana Vignana Vedika, G. Vijayakumar. - Staff Reporter

Notification cancelled

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has announced cancellation of the notification for filling the vacancy of the post of male member due to "technical reasons." In a press release, the registrar stated that a separate notification to fill the vacant post in the commission would be issued at a later date. - Special Correspondent

Arms dump recovered

ADILABAD: Police on Tuesday night recovered an arms dump of the Maoists from Jogapur-Manikgarh forest area of Kagaznagar mandal according to Karimnagar range Deputy Inspector General of Police A.R. Anuradha. She told reporters at Mandamarri that the dump consisted of a 303 rifle with five rounds, 15 detonators, party literature, wire bundles and cooking utensils. Four Maoists had been killed in this area in three successive encounters in November. - Staff Reporter

Man escapes with Rs. 50,000 cash

Nellore: An unidentified offender, who diverted the attention of a person, escaped with Rs. 50,000 at Gudur on Monday. According to available information, Mallikarjuna Rao, after drawing the amount from the bank was returning in a rickshaw when the incident occurred. When he reached the old bus stand, a stranger gained his confidence by saying that he had lost some amount and showed a couple of currency notes, which were strewn on the road. When Mr. Rao, was picking up the notes, the stranger escaped with the cash bag kept in the rickshaw. - Staff Reporter

Voter enrolment process begins

Nellore: With only six months left for the panchayat elections, the exercise relating to enrolment of new voters has picked up in Nellore district. Unmindful of ideologies, all political parties are busy in this process as the coming elections are crucial to their survival. So far a record number of 1.76 lakh applications have been received for the purpose clearly shows the keen interest evinced by the political parties, to woo eligible voters. At Udayagiri, the highest number of 26,511 applications have been received and there are no requests for deletion of names. - Staff Reporter

15 injured

KURNOOL: Fifteen persons were injured when a private tourist bus bound for Hyderabad overturned at Tammarajupalli near Nandyal in Kurnool district on Tuesday.

According to reports, seven of the injured were shifted to the General Hospital here while the remaining were treated at Santiram Hospital at Nandyal. - Staff Reporter

Flag day observed

ANANTAPUR: On the occasion of the Armed Forces flag day held here on Tuesday, NCC cadets and other students from several schools and colleges collected donations from people at several places in the district by raising the slogan "join the army, serve the country." Commanding Officer of NCC battalion here, Col. Rajender K. Jaur, stated that the cadets had collected an amount of Rs. 39,236. - Staff Reporter

Auction of vehicles by RTO

Rajahmundry: The Regional Transport Office of Rajahmundry is going to auction about 30 private vehicles on December 29 whose owners have failed to pay vehicle tax. In a statement on Tuesday, RTO M. Mohana Rao said that they had kept all the 30 vehicles in their office for interested parties to check the condition. He asked the parties who want to participate in auction to pay Rs.500 as initial deposit. - Staff Reporter

Dhyana Yagnam

Rajahmundry: Sri Mytreya Budha Spiritual Trust (Rajahmundry) is going to conduct 41-day Dhyana Yagnam in Shirdi Sai temple, Tilak Road. According to T. Ramadevi, joint secretary of the Trust, the Yagnam will be conducted every day in the evenings, from 6 to 8 p.m. Pyramid Dhyana will give cosmic energy and ailments will be cured through Dhyana Yagna, she added. - Staff Reporter

Minister's visit

Srikakulam: Minister for Marketing Botsa Satyanarayana will visit the district on December 26 and address an avagahana meeting on Indiramma scheme here. He will inaugurate a Panchayat Raj road in Gara and lay foundation stone for a Primary Health Centre in Kinthali. - Special Correspondent

Record loading of rice

Kakinada: As much as 5,000 tonnes of rice in bags, in a single day, was loaded on to the ship `MV DOBRUSH 'at the anchorage port here on December 19, according to RH Ram Gopal, chief of Ms Vishwa Shipping Services. The ship arrived at the port to load 25,000 tonnes of rice of Shivnath Rai Harnaraian (India) Ltd, Delhi to West African Ports. Being the clearing and forwarding and stevedoring agent, the Ms Vishwa Shipping Services has achieved record loading. The company's managing partner Suresh Sarma said that the export clients had appreciated the record loading achievement. - Correspondent
