Dharna over leopard menace

Staff Correspondent

DEHRA DUN: Irate residents of Pokhal area in Pauri Garhwal district have been staging a dharna for the last four days seeking Government orders to shoot a man-eating leopard that has killed a child, maimed several persons and killed livestock in several villages over the past few months. " We will continue to stage the dharna till the Government awakens up the local administration and forest officials who seem to be least bothered about our safety", said Jyoti Bhandari and Anuj Saklani.

It may be mentioned that the leopard menace increases during the winters when the cats climb down to the lower villages in search of food and a less hostile climate. "A similar situation of panic prevails over several villages of Tehri, Chamoli and Uttarkashi districts and it requires some apt scientific handling of the situation before more human beings or the leopards get killed or injured", said Alok Bhatt, a wildlife lover crusading for restoration of the traditional habitat of animals in the higher reaches of Uttaranchal.
