BHOPAL: The historic city of Burhanpur in western Madhya Pradesh would soon become a major tourist attraction. A Rs.4.49-crore ambitious project has been sanctioned by the Central Government to develop the city as an important destination for tourism. Founded by the famous Faruqui rulers in 1400 A.D. in the name of their spiritual leader Shaikh Burhanuddin, the magnificent city of saints, seers and sages was once known as the abode of peace (Darur-suroor). It boasts of exquisite monuments that are silent witnesses to the marvellous tradition of communal harmony and socio-religious and linguistic unity. The place had been acclaimed as the invincible gateway to south thus making it a fascinating place for rulers and conquerors as well as poets and writers. Burhanpur is famous for the "parkotedar" fort built by the famous Farukhi rulers. Situated on the bank of Tapti, the city has a glorious tradition of producing cotton, silk and brocade that were even exported to Europe. An important centre of pilgrimage for the Bohra community, it is famous for its power looms and weavers. It has also emerged as a big market for banana and cotton. Jama Masjid, also known as Bibi Ki Masjid, is an important monument at Burhanpur. It was built by the Faruqui ruler Azam Humayun in 1421. The other major monuments of Burhanpur are Shahi Quila built by Adil Shah in 1590, Jama Masjid built by Vaje Ali Khan in 1590, Shahi Hammam built in 1590, Adil Shah ka Makbara and Nadir Khan ka Makbara built by Shahjehan in 1600A.D, Khooni Bhandara constructed by Abdul Rahim Khan Khanan in 1615, Sukha Bhandara built by Abdul Rahim Khan Khanan in 1615 and Sikhon ki Badi Sangat (Gurudwara) built in 1615.
