Three cases of malaria reported in Sabarimala

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Health Department has confirmed two cases of malaria, besides a suspected case, in Pampa on the foothills of Sabarimala. Sabarimala Medical Officer B.P. Premkumar told The Hindu that two persons have been diagnosed with malaria. One of them is a 45-year-old worker from Salem, attached to the Sabarimala Sanitation Society, and the other a 57-year-old man from Vilappilsala, in Thiruvananthapuram, who has been running a private workshop in Pampa. Both of them have been referred to General Hospital in Pathanamthitta. — Staff Reporter

Questioning on

KOTTAYAM: The police authorities are tight-lipped about the details of the person picked up from Kottayam on Monday under suspicious circumstances, following the visit of President A.J.P. Abdul Kalam. Officers from Central agencies are questioning Shoukat Ali, suspected to be a person hailing from Karnataka whose purse and other identifiable articles were found at the venue of the President's visit in Pathanamthitta. He is, however, reportedly sticking to his stand that he had not visited the place. According to sources, he would be under observation for few more days. — Staff Reporter

Special squads

Thiruvananthapuram: The Director General of Police, Prisons, M. G. Raman, has constituted a special squad to conduct surprise checks in all jails in the State. The eight-member squad headed by S. Sajeevan, lecturer, State Institute of Correctional Administration, would conduct surprise checks to detect if there is any storage of weapons, drugs, cigarettes, beedis, liquor, currency and other prohibited articles in prisons. The squad would be under the direct supervision of the DGP. The squad members are empowered to question as well as record the statements of jail department staff and prison inmates. The squad could enter any prison premise at any time of the day or night after getting prior clearance from the DGP. The jail staff have been ordered not to hinder the functioning of the squad in anyway. - Staff Reporter

Bodies of train accident victims identified

KOTTAYAM: The bodies of the three Sabarimala pilgrims, who were run over by a train at the Neelimangalam railway bridge, near here, on Sunday, have been identified. The bodies were received by their relatives and taken back to Pondicherry on Tuesday.

The deceased have been identified as Vinod, 21, of Mariyamman Coil Street at Viliyannoor, Kalaivarnan, 23, of Nattompakkom and his cousin, Kumar, 23.

HMS seeks pay commission

KOCHI: Hind Mazdoor Sangh (HMS) president Thampan Thomas has said that Government employees will be forced to strike work if the Government failed to appoint the Sixth Wage Commission.

He told reporters here on Tuesday that notice would be served on Railways and other public sector undertakings in the second week of January for an indefinite strike from the third week of February.

He said the national executive committee meeting of the HMS held here had decided to launch an agitation against the decrease in the Provident Fund interest rate. The stir would be organised in association with other trade unions.

Three killed in accidents

THRISSUR: Three persons were killed in two separate road accidents in different parts of the district on Tuesday. Two of them lost their lives when the car in which they were travelling collided with a lorry at Puzhakkalpadam, near the city.

The police gave the names of the victims as Paralam Veettil Verghese, 39, and Kaniampal Panakkal Ittoop, 61, both hailing from Kunnamkulam.

Ittoop was a former councillor of Kunnamkulam municipality. A pedestrian was killed when he was knocked down by a car in the Vadakke Stand area in the city.

The deceased has been identified as Sivanandan, 45, of Manalithara. - Staff Reporter
