UP IN ARMS: Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan greets CITU activists laying siege to the Secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday. Photo: C. Ratheesh Kumar
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government virtually came to a standstill on Tuesday as CITU workers and their family members laid siege to the administrative headquarters at the State, district and taluk levels in Kerala. The action was in protest against the `anti-worker, anti-people policies' the UDF Government had been pursuing during the four-and-a-half years of its term so far. Hundreds of busloads of protestors reached the State Secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram nearly three hours before office time and created a human fort around it to prevent anyone from going inside. The collectorates in other districts and taluk offices across the State too were blocked by the protestors. The blockade was peaceful in all places, with the slogan-shouting CITU workers sweating it out in the sun till afternoon without encountering anyone desirous of breaking their cordon for the customary dip into the files. Addressing the protestors here, Leader of the Opposition V. S. Achuthanandan termed the day's action as a wake-up call to the working class to rise against the UDF and defeat it in the coming Assembly elections.
