Staff Reporter

Celebrations being planned on a massive scale

KARIMNAGAR: The prestigious Sri Raja Rajeshwara (SRR) Degree and PG College in Karimnagar town, which is the oldest education institution in north Telangana region, established in the year 1956, is all set to celebrate its golden jubilee in January 2006 on a massive scale.

The college authorities have decided to celebrate the year-long golden jubilee celebrations by organising seminars, workshops and other competitions. The Chief Minister, Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, will formally launch the golden jubilee celebrations of the college in the first week of January 2006, said the college principal, B Ramchander Rao.

Humble beginnings

At a time when higher education facilities were bleak in this part of Telangana, thanks to the foresight and initiative of the then Chief Minister of erstwhile Hyderabad State, Burgula Ramakrishna Rao, and the then Higher Education Minister, Justice Gopal Rao Ekbote, the college was started with contributions from the public.

The Sri Raja Rajeshwara Swamy Devasthanams in Vemulawada had contributed a major share of Rs 50,000 and hence the college was named after Sri Raja Rajeshwara, the presiding deity of Vemulawada.

NAAC accreditation

Started with a minimum strength of 70 students at the under-graduation level, the college has now grown in leaps and bounds into a post-graduation college and secured B ++ grade in the NAAC accreditation. Presently, the college has a strength of 3,363 in the under-graduate level and 280 at the PG level.

Several products of the college have excelled in various fields, including the former vice-chancellor of Osmania University, Anantha Swamy, and Professor Emeritus, I V Chalapathi Rao.
