KHAMMAM: Tribes and non-tribes from half a dozen villages assembled at Nandigama village near Bhadrachlam and staged a protest against the construction of the Polavaram project on Godavari today. They stopped the vehicles of the Collector Rajendra Narendra Nimje and Superintendent of Police Rajeev Kumar Meena and lodged their protest. Led by the CPI(M) activists, they voiced their concern over the displacement to be caused by the project.
Risk of submersion
The Collector, who was on his way to Kunavaram village along with other district officials to attend meetings being organized with the people facing the risk of submersion, spent about half an hour with the protesters at Nandigama village. Dispelling the fears expressed by the people over the displacement, he said that the Government was out to implement a comprehensive package for the displaced. He told the tribal families that their land would be compensated with land.
Rehabilitation package
People from Mormur, Bandarugudem, Chalampalem and Gannavaram also took part in the protest. The project-affected people would be provided all support as part of the rehabilitation package, assured the Collector. He had a meeting with the people to be affected in Kunavaram village. The CPI(M) activists chanted slogans near the meeting place. They wanted the project to be given up to spare the tribal communities from submersion. The Collector released a poster on the measures to be initiated by the Government as part of the implementation of the rehabilitation and resettlement package.
