NIZAMABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has reportedly said that he will take a positive decision with regard to the establishment of a proposed new university for Telangana region in Nizamabad district. He made this assurance when the former Minister and TRS leader, S. Santosh Reddy, met him on Tuesday afternoon. The former apprised him of the conditions in the district and the reasons for the sanction of the university here.
Removal of imbalance
In a press release issued on behalf of the former Minister here on Tuesday, he said the proposed new university, if established here, would help reduce the imbalance among the regions. He expressed satisfaction over the sanction of three universities for three regions of the State. Osmania University in Hyderabad caters to students in Rangareddy, Nalgonda, Mahaboobnagar, while Kakatiya University in Warangal meets the educational needs of Warangal, Khammam and Karimnagar districts. The proposed new university in Nizamabad will cover the entire north Telangana and parts of Karimnagar and Medak districts.
Valid reason
Mr. Santosh Reddy explained to the Chief Minister that the Government Giriraj College in the town had acquired an autonomous status and NAAC certificate. The college, which was located in a sprawling 18-acre campus, had been upgraded and achieved a place for itself in the Osmania University jurisdiction. Therefore, the town is the right place for establishing the university as there are hundreds of acres of land available adjacent to the Giriraj College, he said.
Dharna threatened
Meanwhile, Youth Associations Federation State president, Jitta Balakrishna Reddy, has threatened the Government that the youth activists, if necessary, will stage a dharna in front of the Chief Minister's residence if the proposed new university for Telangana is not set up in Nizamabad district. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, he observed that Nizamabad was a better choice for setting up the university, because it was centrally located in north Telangana, which had no university so far. The demand for an university in Nizamabad had been long pending, he said. North Telangana was lagging behind in the field of education and had poor literacy rate, compared with the other Telangana districts. As a result, the number of unemployed youth was also increasing in the area, he said and said that the proposed university would reduce the regional imbalance if it was set up here.
