Varavara Rao produced in Gurazala court

Staff Reporter

Bandh passes off peacefully

GUNTUR: The bandh call given by Communist Party of India (Maoist) Guntur District Committee went off peacefully on Tuesday with no untoward incident reported anywhere.

The bandh did not destabilize normal life in Palnadu region, but some wine shops were closed to avoid any kind of confrontation with the activists at Piduguralla, Gurazala, Karempudi, Durgi and Macherla. At Gurazala, all educational institutions functioned normally. The RTC buses did not run to villages in Karempudi and other mandals, but the police forcibly got some of the shops opened.

No impact

Superintendent of Police V.C. Sajjanar said that the bandh call spread over some areas of Prakasam district -- Pullacheruvu and Tripuranthakam -- had no impact on normal life. The State Committee had given a call for `State Bandh' on December 23.

Meanwhile, Virasam leader Varavara Rao was produced in the court of Second Additional Munsif Magistrate K. Nilima, in a case related to violation of police orders through the conduct of a meeting in 2002. Hearing in the case has been posted to January 3. Varavara Rao was brought in a van from Chanchalguda jail and taken back after appearance in the court.

In a related case on Gaddar, Ratnamala and Srinivasa Rao in the same court, exemption petitions from appearance were filed and hearing posted to January 3.
