UDUPI: Tension prevailed at Yellur and Padubidri villages on Tuesday after people from Yellur protested against the survey works undertaken by Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) at Yellur for the proposed 1015-MW coal-based Nagarjuna power project. Two vehicles belonging to the KIADB were damaged in the incident. People said trouble started when KIADB officials accompanied some officials of Nagarjuna Power Corporation Ltd. for marking works in connection with the land survey. People, particularly women, objected to the move. They damaged a car and jeep belonging to the KIADB, reports said. At around 8 p.m., KIADB officials lodged a complaint at the Padubidri police station saying that they were attacked by a group of 53 people at Yellur. On getting information about this, around 400 people gheraoed the Padubidri police station and staged a dharna there saying that the officials illegally entered their houses. The protesters said the police should register their complaint and take immediate action. They also demanded that the "false" complaints given by the officials be withdrawn. Kaup MLA Lalaji Mendan and Naveen Shetty, president of the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi District Fish Marketing Federation, who arrived on the spot, supported the protesters. Assistant Superintendent of Police Chandrashekhar calmed the protesters and said action on the matter will be taken up on Wednesday.
