Hot fare back with bang

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: A sleaze harvest is on yet again in the city. Several hot and lusty films have stormed city theatres and at least 10 `A' certificate films are being screened in Hyderabad and Secunderabad.

Banished by the police after a string of protests by women's groups on a couple of occasions, the films have not only made a silent comeback, but also seem to be raking in the moolah. What's more, new theatres have been added to the list of selective theatres that generally screen such films!

"One does not know the fate of regular films these days, even those with big stars and filmmakers. But these sleazy films invariably lure audiences," points out a film distributor on condition of anonymity. Industry experts point out that the series of sleazy films that have hit the city theatres in the last couple of months have been earning good revenue. That some of the films were released simultaneously in theatres all over the twin cities only goes to show their popularity.

For survival

With the advent of multiplexes, some of the regular theatres that fell on bad times have taken recourse to sleazy films to ensure their survival. Not surprisingly language is no bar for such films as they manage to attract audiences whether it is English, Hindi or Telugu.

Sample some — `Chulbuli Baby', `Kajuraholo Kamasuthralu', `Love Unlimited', `Miss Elise', `Prema Dhukanam', `Angoor', Vayasu Joru' and what have you. With provocative and explicit ads and posters and screaming one-liners like — high voltage lust and desire at their peak — they seem to have hit the bulls-eye.

Earlier, films like `Sirocco', `Basic Instinct' and `Body of Evidence' had literally ruled the roost with audiences thronging theatres in a big way.

Dubious record

Some of the films even completed the hundred-day run, creating a dubious record of sorts! "With explicit scenes, these films attract the same volume of audiences as films of big heroes do," the distributor points out.

"Though we get to see steamy sequences on Internet, the pleasure of watching them on the big screen is unbeatable," insists a group of students waiting outside a theatre in Secunderabad. With some of the theatres infamous (or is it famous?) for reportedly interpolating scenes with the regular screening, the going only seems to be merrier.
