Online enrolment of voters a big hit

Staff Reporter

Maximum requests from Malakpet leave officials surprised

  • Exercise undertaken in line with EC's directive
  • District election office receives a whopping 4.8 lakh claims
  • Maharajgunj, with over 9,900 entries, comes last
  • Final list to be published on February 10

HYDERABAD: There might have been complaints about online enrolment of voters introduced by the Election Commission of India but a whopping 40,000 entries have been received by the district election officer of the twin cities.

And a majority of such claims for inclusion through e-mail have come from the Malakpet constituency though officials are unable explain why. "The response has been quite good and we still have to download some more claims," said an election official here on Tuesday.

    Verification

The EC directed special summary revision of electoral rolls for the 13 constituencies of the twin cities from November 4 to December 5 with the stipulation that those who have attained 18 years of age as on January 1, 2006, have to get themselves enrolled.

Though an entry can be made online, the actual entry into the electoral list will be done only after physical verification of the candidate. The district election office got a whopping 4.80 lakh new claimants.

The largest number of entries has come from the Malakpet constituency with 1,06,997 (total number of electors now: 5,68,484) followed by Khairatabad with 94,975 (total no: 8,14,698) and Karwan coming third at 36,506 (total no: 3,27,563). Maharajgunj constituency attracted the least number of entries with 9,918 (total no: 93,626).

Applications were also filed by electors for objections -3,657, corrections in names - 6,554 and change in address - 6,129.

Election officials said the verification exercise had started and would be completed by January 9 next with the help of the special software to weed out dubious claims.

The final electoral list will be published a month later on February 10.

Usually, 40 per cent of the entries are ratified because of multiple entry of names and other reasons. However, the electoral list will be updated continuously all through the year as and when new entries come and verified to be found correct, officials say.
