NEW DELHI: Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy has convened a high-level meeting on Wednesday to discuss the situation arising out of the massive demolition drive being carried out by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi in various parts of the Capital. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, all Members of Parliament from Delhi, and DPCC president Ram Babu Sharma have been invited to the meeting. The decision to convene the meeting was taken after a delegation led by Mr. Sharma met the Union Minister on Tuesday morning and apprised him of the panic that has set in among the citizens in view of the ongoing demolition drive being carried out by the MCD under directions of the Delhi High Court. It is understood that Union Urban Development Secretary Anil Baijal, Delhi Development Authority Vice-Chairman Dinesh Rai, Chief Secretary S. Regunathan, Delhi Police Commissioner K.K. Paul and other senior officials have also been invited to the meeting. The demolitions have led to a furore in political circles, and the elected representatives of the people are worried about the possible political fall-out of this exercise. Earlier in the day, a Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee delegation met Mr. Reddy at his Tees January Marg residence and sought his intervention in the matter. The Members of Parliament from Delhi -- Sajjan Kumar, Jagdish Tytler and Krishna Tirath -- were part of the delegation led by Mr. Sharma. The delegation brought to the notice of Mr. Reddy the large-scale demolitions carried out in residential areas and the panic that this exercise had created in the minds of the people. The delegation requested Mr. Reddy to convene a high-level meeting to sort out the situation and work towards an early resolution of the problem.
