Letters to the Editor
The rape and murder of Pratibha Murthy, a young employee of a call centre in Bangalore, has dampened the spirit of all women employees, not just those in the IT/BPO industry. While it is good to seek police help, all organisations could consider providing training in karate and other martial arts for their women staff.
G.V.K. Durga Ravi,
* * * No sane person will disagree that the crime was executed with total ruthlessness by the perpetrator. Such persons are a menace to society and deserve capital punishment.
B.S. Jayaraman,
* * * The incident has focussed on the safety of women in the IT industry but men too face the risk of being robbed or injured by criminals. Given the fact that BPOs/call centres have come to stay in India, a blueprint needs to be drawn up for foolproof security for those working in these centres.
K.P. Mahalingam,
* * * The fact that we are increasingly moving towards a 24x7 world and that more people now work at night, should prompt our lawmakers and law-enforcers to work towards providing better safety for all, particularly women.
Nisha Kartik,
* * * The P&T Department, in the 1950s itself, provided dormitory facilities for operators on night duty at the two all-women trunk telephone exchanges in Madras and Coimbatore. Why can such an arrangement not be made by the IT/BPO firms for their women staff?
K.C. Ananthakrishnan,
