Court admits channel plea

Government's guidelines on telecasting the India-Pakistan matches challenged

  • Ten Sports' agreement with PCB finalised before guidelines
  • It cannot have a retrospective effect, says Ten Sports counsel
  • Additional Solicitor-General says offer is against spirit of guidelines

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Wednesday admitted a petition filed by sports channel TEN Sports, challenging the Union Government's guidelines on telecasting the India-Pakistan matches scheduled for next year.

A Division Bench, comprising Justices Ranjana Desai and Abhay Oak admitted the petition but refused to grant any interim relief and adjourned the hearing till further orders.

Iqbal Chagla, counsel for Taj TV Ltd. that owns the channel, had filed the writ petition challenging the Government's guidelines, which required private sports channels to share their feed with Doordarshan.

As per the guidelines on uplinking and downlinking, all matches involving India, both at home and abroad, have to be shared with the public broadcaster on the terrestrial and DTH platforms. — UNI
