Pondicherry
Special Correspondent
Pondicherry: The secretary of the Pondicherry State unit of the All India Anna Dravida Munetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) A.Anbalagan, MLA, has said that President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the Central Relief Committee complimented Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for the good work she and her Government had done in relieving the people of the agony of havoc caused by the floods. But Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi who "could not bear the excellent work the State Government and the Chief Minister have been doing in flood-hit areas" was causing chaos and confusion by instigating the DMK cadres in the relief distribution centres, he alleged. The baseless rumours and misleading information that was spread among the people by the DMK had been responsible for the stampede and death of 42 persons, he alleged. A DMK councillor had since been held for interrogation.
Ex gratia sanctioned
He said Ms. Jayalalithaa had after the incident visited the injured at the hospital and consoled the next of kin of those who were killed in the melee. She also extended ex gratia to themand instituted an enquiry into the incident.
