SINGAPORE: Militants of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) have completed the decommissioning of their declared weapons under the peace-and-political accord that they signed with the Government of Indonesia last August. The last consignment out of the 840 declared weapons was handed over to authorities on Wednesday, according to reports. The Aceh Monitoring Mission, a task force set up by the European Union and the ASEAN, oversaw the surrender. Under the August 15 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between GAM and Jakarta, the process is to be completed by December-end. As agreed, Jakarta has been steadily downsizing its military presence.
