Most Al-Qaeda leaders killed, says Russia

Vladimir Radyuhin

MOSCOW: More than two-thirds of Al-Qaeda leaders have been killed or detained by the secret services of the anti-terrorist coalition, Russia's spy chief has said. "About 70 per cent of Al-Qaeda leaders, including close confidants of Osama bin Laden, have been arrested or destroyed in the course of the anti-terrorist operation since 2001," head of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service Sergei Lebedev said in an interview in connection with the 85th anniversary of the service. The Interfax news agency quoted Mr. Lebedev as saying that a number of Al-Qaeda emissaries have been killed in Chechnya, including Khattab, Abu Walid, Abu Dzeit and Abu Omar Safs. "Joint action of all countries, special services and international organisations are needed to defeat terrorism," Mr. Lebedev said.
