Involve youth in learning Tamil music: Barnala

Special Correspondent

He inaugurated the 63rd annual Tamil Isai festival of Tamil Isai Sangam

CHENNAI: Tamil Isai Sangam should take the onerous responsibility of involving more youth in learning Tamil music, especially those in rural areas who have exemplary skills. Their skills should be encouraged, Governor Surjit Singh Barnala said on Wednesday.

Inaugurating the 63rd annual Tamil Isai festival of the sangam here, Mr. Barnala said Tamil Isai had a rich and ancient tradition, which was nurtured, fostered and kept alive by outstanding musicians. To spread the tradition and preserve it for posterity, the sangam should encourage and provide opportunities to youth.

Describing music as a living force, a unifying bond and a messenger of peace and goodwill, he said it cut across all barriers of religion and caste or creed. It had a unique cementing power. He felt that music could give the healing touch and hold the country together at a time when its unity and integrity need to be guarded against divisible and fissiparous tendencies.

Foreign students should come here to study more about Indian music, while the musicians here should go abroad and try to find out the underlying theme of unity in music.

A comparative study of the basic approach of different systems was essential, he said.

Confers title

Mr. Barnala conferred the title of "Isaiperaringnar" on nagaswaram vidwan Thiruvidaimaruthur P.S.V. Raja. The title consisted of a gold medallion, citation and a cash amount of Rs. 10,000. He also launched the website of Tamil Isai Sangam.

P.R. Gokulakrishnan, sangam president, in his welcome address said the aim of the sangam was to popularise Tamil music. Even those who once criticised Tamil music were now singing them.
