Suspension of power supply

CHENNAI: Power supply will be suspended at Ayapakkam and Royapuram on Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Answering service withdrawn

The answering machine service provided by BSNL Chennai Telephones on its b-fone is being withdrawn from December 26, says a press release.

Health camp

Hindu Mission Hospital conducted `Kannappar free eye camp' at Krishna Nagar in Tambaram on December 21. Over 140 persons were screened for eye ailments and 16 referred for free IOL surgery.

Diabetic eye screening camp

Rajan Eye Care Hospital in association with Rotary Club of Madras T. Nagar conducted a free diabetic eye screening camp at the hospital premises on December 18.

The medical team led by Dr. Mohan Rajan identified 17 persons with diabetic eye disorders. Free medicines and spectacles were also distributed.

Workshop on `age-control'

Kaya Skin Clinic at Anna Nagar will host an `age-control' workshop on Thursday with live demonstration of services by dermatologist Sunita Thomas. The timing is between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. For details contact phone number 30929150/9151.

Bank distributes relief to flood-hit

State Bank of India's Mogappair branch distributed rice to flood-affected persons on December 19. Assistant general manager N. Mani distributed five kg rice to 300 families in AKR Colony, Ambedkar Nagar and Mogappair. Officials also donated 50 kgs of rice to two orphanages, Samarpana and Saraswathi Ammal Charitable Trust.

Students donate blood

Lions Club of Velachery conducted a blood bank on December 20 at Mohammed Sathak College of Arts & Science at Medavakkam Road. About 175 units of blood were collected.

BSNL employees stage dharna

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited employees owing allegiance to various unions staged a dharna on Wednesday protesting against various proposals announced by the Union Ministry of Communications recently, including a reduction in the ILD and NLD licence fee and allowing private telecom service providers to share the BSNL infrastructure in rural areas.

The dharna was part of a nationwide agitation by both executives and employees of BSNL, said R. Gunasekaran, circle secretary of the BSNL Employees Union, Chennai Telephones Circle.

He said the proposals, including one permitting the private players to have access the last mile (copper) network of BSNL, would result in huge losses for BSNL.

The unions, he added, have decided to go on a day's strike on January 5.
