OBCs will get Mandal advantage: Arjun

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Every single advantage that accrued to the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) from the Mandal Commission report will be there after the passage of the Constitution Amendment Bill on reservation in private unaided educational institutions. Steps will have to be taken to this end, Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh told the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

"We would not leave it halfway, the question does not arise," he said allaying apprehensions about the prospects of the OBCs. Also reservation in central institutes would be addressed holistically. An enabling provision in this Bill would make it easier for the government to sort out the issue. On the demand by members from across the political spectrum for inclusion of minority institutions under the purview of the Bill, the Minister said the issue would be taken up with the Law Ministry and the government would see what could be done. The State Governments would have to play a role, he said, adding "appropriate remedial measures, if necessary, will be taken."
