A NEW MONITOR: Officials in front of the electromagnetic display unit put up at the Marine Drive in Kochi on Wednesday. - Photo: Vipinchandran.
The electromagnetic display unit put up at Marine Drive grounds by GAIL (India) Ltd. ,is meant to record the polluting gases present in the city environment. A sensor picks up the gases present in the surroundings and transmits the readings to a large display board. The system, inaugurated on Wednesday, failed to denote the presence of pollutants in the air on the inaugural day. Does it mean that the city environment is pollution free? "Not at all," says R. Suresh Kumar, director, Magneto Dynamics Private Ltd., the company that executed the project. The sensor indicates the nature of the air in its immediate vicinity. The readings will vary at different points in the city. This apart, the breeze from the backwater reduces the presence of polluting gases in the air at the location of the board. It will present a different picture if the sensor is placed at other areas in the city.
