Strike hits transport on NH 39

Correspondent

IMPHAL: Buses and trucks could not leave Imphal and vehicles from other States could not come into Manipur on Thursday, when a 12-hour strike was called by the Southern Angami People's Organisation.

The protest, begun at 6 a.m. along National Highway 39, was against alleged police inaction over the killing of a Nagaland taxi driver in Manipur. The body of Vihoukho Phira, who was abducted on December 4 in Bishnupur district, was found and his vehicle recovered.

However, a police spokesman told The Hindu that two suspects were arrested on December 12.

The Director-General of Police already informed his Nagaland counterpart of the developments.
