CRPF edges out Northern Railway

NEW DELHI: Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) beat Northern Railway 6-5 through the `sudden-death' tiebreaker after a 1-1 draw in regulation time in a preliminary round match of the Nehru hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium here on Thursday.

Hari scored first for the railway team in the 15th minute while S. K. Vasisht equalised for CRPF four minutes after the break. In the first set of five `strokes' both teams converted four each leading to the `sudden death' period where Vasisht and Simon Tirkey scored for CRPF to ensure victory.

CRPF will meet Karnataka XI to decide a qualifier for the super league that starts on Friday with a match between Army (Red) and Air India.
