IMMERSED IN DEVOTION: A canvas from the collection "Krishna Consciousness" by P.K. Roy.
Lord Krishna and his devotees have been portrayed in myriad moods by artist Prithwish Kumar Roy in his latest series of painting on "Krishna Consciousness" that opened at Lalit Kala Akademi in Delhi on Thursday. As Roy grew up in Tripura, he was exposed to the religious chants of "Hare Rama Hare Krishna" practically every day. "Though I am not a religious person, I have made a series of paintings on Lord Krishna depicting the dresses of his devotees in the North-East State and also of those who pay obeisance in the pilgrimage town of Vrindavan. As patterns on the dresses of devotees at these two places are different, I decided to put it down on canvas. Moreover, such is the charm of Lord Krishna that even today people across the globe are spellbound by him," says Roy. For the past three years Roy had been painting on the theme "Krishna Consciousness" and says that through the exhibition he has showed Lord Krishna as a lover of nature and landscape. Of the 25 paintings exhibited, 18 are on Krishna and his devotees. "I have not shown Krishna with Radha because I am basically a landscape artist and do not want to depict too many faces. Of course, now I am doing figurative works," says Roy. Before painting in watercolour, the artist does a lot of spadework like sketching and processing. Awinner of the Navodaya National Award in 1999, Roy is an art teacher at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Gurgaon district and has done a number of solo and groups shows at various art galleries across Delhi. His works have also been displayed at the annual exhibition of paintings organised by Rabindra Kala Parishad at Agartala. He has also sketched for a book of illustration, "Bhavi Bani Sarpanch", published by the National Book Trust and Rajiv Gandhi Foundation in 2001. Madhur Tankha
