dated December 23, 1955: Advice to film producers

The President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, has said that the responsibility of film producers had increased with the expansion of the scope of the film industry and appealed to them to produce films with proper plots and healthy presentation so as to develop the character of the people. Distributing the State awards for films at a function in New Delhi on December 21, he said that instead of the Government imposing restrictions on films, the producers themselves should observe restraint and produce the right type of pictures. The President's gold medal for the best feature film was won by "Mirza Ghalib" (Hindi) produced by Minerva Movietone, Bombay. Mr. Sohrab Modi received the award from the President amidst cheers. Prime Minister Nehru was present at the function. Dr. B.V. Keskar, Minister for Information and Broadcasting, welcoming the gathering, said the object of giving State awards was to encourage the production of good films by publicly showing appreciation of their high aesthetic and cultural value. Mr. S.S. Vasan, proposing a vote of thanks, said that in spite of the difficulties in the business, the limitations on its resources and the atmosphere of ignorant and ill-informed criticism, it was a matter for gratification that the film industry had not only sustained itself but had also grown from strength to strength.
