Additional coaches for special trains

CHENNAI: One AC three-tier and four sleeper class coaches will be attached to the following special trains running between Chennai Central and Thiruvananthapuram to meet the rush of passengers, says a railway release. Train no. 0631 Chennai Central - Thiruvananthapuram special on December 23, 25, 27 and 29; 0632 Thiruvananthapuram - Chennai Central special on December 24, 26 and 30; 0633 Thiruvananthapuram - Chennai Central special on December 28 and 0634 Chennai Central - Thiruvananthapuram special on December 31. — Special Correspondent

Party constitution: EC directive to Vijaykanth

NEW DELHI: The efforts of actor Vijaykanth to get his new party, Desiya Murpoku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) registered as a regional party suffered a setback with the Election Commission asking him to re-draft the constitution to ensure inner-party democracy.

After floating the party in Madurai, Mr. Vijaykanth in September, he had filed an application with the Election Commission for registration by submitting a copy of the party constitution.

According to highly placed sources, the Commission perused the constitution and found that all the powers had been vested on the president. It was pointed out that such conferment of power on one individual would be violative of inner party democracy. To ensure more transparency in the party's the working, the Commission has written to Mr. Vijaykanth to suitably amend it so that his new political outfit could be registered as a regional party. — Legal Correspondent

Woman sentenced

CHENNAI: A city magistrate court has sentenced a woman to undergo simple imprisonment for six months for subjecting a child to cruelty. The child was working as a servant at home.

The XXIII Metropolitan Magistrate, Saidapet, S. Umamaheswari, held the accused, Banumathi of Mandaveli, a nurse working in a city hospital, guilty under sections 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the IPC and 23 (punishment for cruelty to juvenile or child) of the Juvenile Justice (care and protection of children) Act, 2000 and awarded her six months simple imprisonment and Rs. 2,500 fine for each of the two charges. The sentences would run concurrently. Banumathi paid the fine. The court suspended the operation of the substantive portion of the sentence for a month to enable her to file an appeal.

The prosecution casewas that Banumathi subjected the child belonging to Valangaiman to cruelty. — Special Correspondent

Temple theft: accused surrender in court

THANJAVUR: Six of the accused in the temple jewellery theft case registered by the Tiruvarur district police, (except Sankaracharya Sri Jayendra Saraswathi and Likmichand), who got anticipatory bail from the Madras High Court, surrendered before the Judicial Magistrate court at Mannargudi on Thursday.

S. Ramachandran, Sethuraman, Chandrasekaran, Balasubramanian, Venkatrajulu, Somasundara Sivachariyar and Muthu Gurukkal executed a bond for Rs. 5,000 and two sureties and got the bail. The court ordered that they surrender before the Judicial Magistrate Court I at Mannargudi within 15 days. A case was registered against the Sankaracharya and eight others by the Kottur police on a complaint that the accused had removed the jewellery and Sivalingam from Periyakudi Arulmigu Soundaranayagi Samedha Agastheeswaraswamy temple on November 12. — Staff Reporter

Lawyers boycott courts

PERAMBALUR : Lawyers here abstained from different courts here on Thursday in protest against the proposed setting up of Village Courts.

An emergency meeting of the Perambalur Bar Association, with its president E. Valluvan presiding, held yesterday decided to boycott courts till December 30.

DPI demonstration

PERAMBALUR : Cadres of the Dalit Panthers of India staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate here on Thursday, demanding proper distribution of flood relief to the eligible families. Earlier, led by the district organiser, Pon. Pavanan, they took out a procession.

AIDS Awareness Week

PERAMBALUR : As part of observance of the `AIDS Awareness Week', a health camp was inaugurated by Collector D. Vivekanandan at the District Headquarters Hospital here on Wednesday.

Since the health camp is sponsored by the Transport Department, all those who had applied for driving licence and renewal of license besides the trainers at the driving schools were screened at the hospital.

Earlier, the Collector administered a pledge on control and prevention of AIDS.

The Superintendent of Police, P. Parasuraman, the Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, T. Kannan, were among those who were present.

A meeting was held in which compact disc on AIDS awareness, prepared by the Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society was played.

Presiding over a similar function organised under the auspices of the Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women (Mahalir Thittam), the Collector underlined the role of women in eliminating the incidence of AIDS.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 120.20 feet on Thursday. The inflow was 6,616 cusecs, and the outflow 6,063 cusecs. — Staff Reporter.

Panchayat vice-president to be elected

ERODE: The State Election Commission has ordered the conduct of election to the post of vice-president of the Kondalam panchayat in Kodumudi and accordingly, the election would be conducted on December 30, said the Collector, D. Karthikeyan in a press release issed on Thursday.

The notification for the election was issued on Thursday.

The panchayat members will meet on December 30 to elect the vice- president. The post has been lying vacant for months, he added.

Uneasy calm in hospital

Nagercoil: Uneasy calm prevailed in Kanyakumari Government Medical College Hospital on Thursday following the death of woman. Her relatives sought action against the doctor responsible for her death.

According to police, Kasthuri (25), wife of Ayyappan of Akkarai near Suchindrum, delivered a male baby on Tuesday and underwent family planning operation. Meanwhile she developed pain in her stomach and died without responding to treatment. The cause of the death was not known. — Staff Reporter

Youth missing

Tuticorin: Amarnath (27), son of Rajendran, a retired principal of Kamaraj College here, was allegedly missing since October 8. Police said a case was registered in this regard based on High Court directive. The youth was said to have gone to a computer centre but never returned. — Staff Reporter

Held on cheating charge

Tuticorin : The police on Thursday arrested Lingaraj (36) on a charge of cheating Rathinavel here recently. Police said Lingaraj, supplier of raw lime, took Rs. 65,000 from Ratinavel, an industrialist, but did not supply it on time. When Ratinavel questioned this, the accused assaulted him and threatened him with dire consequences. — Staff Reporter
