Sensex gains fresh ground

MUMBAI: The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensex on Thursday gained fresh ground and recovered by 33 points on good buying support, mainly from foreign institutional investors and to some extent from operators and retail investors.

The market, however, lost some of the early gains midway due to profit-selling in select index-based heavyweights on anticipation that FIIs might restrict their activity ahead of the long Christmas holidays, brokers said.

The BSE 30-share sensitive index (Sensex) opened firm at 9398.62 against yesterday's close of 9339.17 and rallied further to an intra-day high of 9413.70. However, the higher level was shortlived and the index declined sharply to a low of 9328.76. However, a fag-end buying spree pushed the Sensex up and ended at 9372.30, revealing a fresh gain of 33.13 points.

The FIIs have been heavy buyers throughout the month with a net investment of Rs. 7,869 crore. On Tuesday, they made a good net purchase of Rs. 322 crore. Weak trend in the Asian markets, where Nikkie, Hang Sang and Taiwan indices closed lower, also dampened sentiment towards the mid-session, brokers said. . — PTI
